Call to Artists

CUBE Gallery is currently seeking submissions for our 2009 show season.

Artists interested in showing as a feature artist at CUBE are requested to submit their show concept for consideration. Shows will open on the first Friday of each month. We are accepting submissions through October 2008.

Submission requirements:

  • 3-5 images. These may be 4 by 6 photographs or jpegs 4 by 6 inches at 300dpi.
  • An artists statement and bio.
  • A letter describing your concept for your show.
  • If your work can not hang on a wall include photos of your display system.
  • SASE if you want any materials returned.

CUBE Classes are here . . .

Have you heard about the ancient medium of encaustic painting and wanted to give it a try? What about drawing or journal making? Maybe you have an idea for a book, but would like to have a professional designer guide you in preparing your book for on-demand printing.

Well, you’re in luck! New CUBE classes are starting this Fall. Please review the listings below and message info@thecubegallery.com for more information. Don’t see a class listed you would like to take? Please message us with your class wish-list. Since CUBE gallery is on the cozy side, we will be keeping class size small and customizing to meet student interests.


Cube classes for September 2008

New Calligraphy Class—Five Week Series: Starting Sept. 15th, and continuing Mondays 6pm – 7pm, instructor: Penelope Culbertson. This class focuses on Italic Lettering. Beginning with pen and ink, then advancing to the use of large pens and brushes. Additional instruction for using Italic as a handwriting for those interested. There is no previous experience necessary and all supplies are provided. Cost is $15 per class or $70 for the series. Basic book binding:
Create your own hand bound journal to use as a sketchbook, photo album, or to record your thoughts. All materials included.
Wednesday, September 10th: 11am – 2pm. Instructor: Kimberly Kent.

Basic Drawing: For all you artists out there who have never taken a drawing class, or just need to brush up.
Bring a large sketchpad, several weights of pencils, a kneaded eraser, and some charcoal. All other materials provided.
Session I basics of line and shape. Tuesday, September 16 6-8:30PM $50. Session II form and depth. Tuesday, September 23 6-8:30 PM $50. Session III materials playshop. Tuesday, September 30 6-8:30 PM $50.

Basic Encaustic: Learn this earliest of painting mediums. Leave each day with a painting and a new skill.

Encaustic Painting, the direct approach. All materials provided.

Encaustic Collage. Layer text, images, and color. Bring personal letters, journals, and photos.

Call to Artists

a shaped covering for the head worn for warmth, as a fashion item, or as part of a uniform.

CUBE Gallery is currently seeking submissions for our first juried show of masks and hats. Artwork submitted should be either wearable or otherwise follow the theme. Works sold as wearable must be well constructed and durable.
All works will arrive at the gallery ready to display. Work that is not able to hang should include a means of display. All work will be priced for sale, the gallery will retain a 35% commission.

Works will by juried by the fabulous Alyce Cornyn-Selby.
Alyce Cornyn-Selby, called "The Mad Hatter" by The Oregonian, is the curator
of America's national Hat Museum, located in the historic Ladd-Reingold House.
Over 1,000 hats are displayed in this century-old Edwardian home just 6
minutes from downtown Portland—"the quirkiest attraction in Oregon."
